As the first and most effective coordinator of the Poverello’s Homeless Outreach Team, I was instrumental in helping transition the notorious shelter from downtown Missoula, where business leaders were VERY EAGER to see us move, to its current location on West Broadway.

To engineer community acceptance of this move, we used the National Coalition Building Institute and its director at the time, Amie Thurber, turned her work on this project into her master thesis, titled “Housing A Homeless Shelter: A Case Study In Community Deliberation”. Here’s a quote from Thurber’s dissertation (PDF) describing the effort to convince this neighborhood that the problems they are experiencing now wouldn’t be happening:

Theories of deliberative democracy have a number of strengths when applied to settings of community conflict. Deliberative processes may legitimize decision making; even when people object to the final outcome, they are more likely to accept decisions if their perspectives have been thoughtfully considered (Freeman, 2000; Guntmann & Thompson, 2004). Further, the deliberative process is consistent with democratic values. In seeking perspectives from those who will be impacted by the decision – as opposed to simply imposing a decision – a group, organization, and/or government demonstrates respect for its members. Further, when members thoughtfully consider one another’s positions, they demonstrate respect for one another (Guntmann & Thompson, 2004).

It wasn’t easy convincing community members that we would be good neighbors, but with Amie Thurber’s ability to systematically create the illusion that local leaders were NOT just pleasing the downtown business community by shifting this problem to a poorer part of town, the initial move appeared, at first, to be a huge propaganda success, accomplished in 4 key phases of manipulation:

NCBI launched a four-phase process. First, we completed an assessment through individual interviews and focus groups. Second, we facilitated an open community meeting that focused on creating opportunities for participants to share with and learn from one another. Third, we led a work group process where a small group of representatives from various stakeholder groups vetted specific sites. Finally, we facilitated a final open community meeting where the public deliberated site alternatives before the Poverello Center made its final decision.

Since none of the other locations were really viable, my perspective on this process is that it was mostly performative–what Epstein’s pal, Noam Chomsky, might call “manufacturing consent”–and guess what? For awhile, it worked!

Unfortunately, reality caught up to my former employer, and now they are deploying a strategic face to do the first round of damage control.

Emily Gibson, formerly Emily Bentley, is the wife of Matt Gibson (killer of Missoula’s alt-weekly), and it was Emily who stepped up to the mic on Wednesday, not the person actually running the shelter. I guess Jill Bonny, who Council was told had other meetings to attend, couldn’t clear her schedule to make a direct plea to keep over $200,000 in city taxpayer money.

The first clip above features Emily Gibson’s stuttering defense of the program I effectively led from 2010 to when I left my position in February of 2016. The second clip below features claims of cleanups and a description of the failed “good neighbor policy” that I was responsible for instituting during my time working at the shelter.

When I walked the West Broadway Island on Thursday, just one day after Emily Gibson successfully defended Bob Campbell’s defunding attempt, what I found included needles in proximity to bullet casings and shotgun shells, burned grass, and some books for those idle hours NOT completely high on drugs.

Is this ok?

Needles, bullets, books, stuffed animals, and a rainbow slinky. This is the kind of trash one finds in a retarded town like Missoula.

As a practicing trash alchemist, I am able to take pieces of trash and make fascinating connections, like finding a piece of discarded mail to give me a better idea of who is living out here, which could come in handy in cases of murder and arson.

Willing to pay it forward? How about just cleanup after yourself, Candise, so that the 80,000 other people living in this valley don’t have risk their health taking a walk by the fucking river?

For a more visceral feel for what it’s like to be in closer proximity to my former employer, here’s a brief clip I recorded yesterday of me on my bike listening to a woman scream FUCKING FAGGOT while walking from Hawthorn street to Cedar street, where Bob Campbell warned citizens in this town NOT to go on Wednesday.

One of the most shocking parts of the conversation about my former program, though, got framed as an example of SUCCESS, and that’s the role of delivering meds, including anti-psychotic medication, to homeless people all around Missoula.

Are you fucking kidding me?

At risk of stating the obvious (because maybe it’s not obvious to functional idiots), holding other people’s medication–ESPECIALLY if any of that medication can be abused recreationally–is not just DANGEROUS, it’s legally dubious, and not something that should be done unless part of a very specific treatment plan with an end-goal of getting someone OUT of the situation they’re in.

Also, if you are employing “peer support”, meaning someone in recovery working with other addicts, this could have VERY BAD effects, as evidenced by two people I’ve unfortunately covered recently, one of whom I connected to the death of Joey Thompson three years ago.

I agree with Bob Campbell that actions speak louder than words, so as words continue bouncing around virtual spaces about how awful and disgusting I am, the evidence proving the accuracy of my warnings continues to mount.

Yesterday’s Budget and Finance Committee meeting lasted over 5 hours, but it was a public comment made in just the first 15 minutes that got my attention.

Why?

Because, as you will see, no one can make the word “values” sound like an extortion racket like a non-profit/DSA foot-soldier:

Dylan Wells works for the Front Step Community Land Trust, one of Missoula’s MANY non-profits that must follow certain rules in order to maintain their tax-exempt status, but those rules are admittedly “murky”, which is why a non-profit that helps non-profits (Headwaters Foundation) provides information like this:

Lobbying can be a powerful tool to advance your mission and amplify the voices of the communities you serve. But nonprofits often find themselves navigating a murky area between advocacy and compliance. “Can we say this?” “Will this jeopardize our tax-exempt status?” If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone! Nonprofit leaders across the country share these concerns. The good news is that nonprofits can engage in lobbying, as long as they follow the rules.

Tax-exempt nonprofits can lobby, but the IRS says it cannot be a “substantial part” of a nonprofit’s activities. What does “substantial” mean? Unfortunately, the IRS doesn’t give a clear answer, which is why many nonprofits who wish to lobby choose to file for the 501(h) election.

Yeah, sure, “rules” exist, but what I’m going to show today is that the rules don’t stop the incestuous nature of Missoula’s non-profit scene in any meaningful way, starting with Dylan Wells and his work with the DSA:

While most readers will naturally focus on the content, it’s the location of these DSA meetings that one must scrutinize, since “Goodworks” is a Mary Stranahan project, and Sparkplug Mary is ALL OVER Missoula’s non-profit ecosphere.

…is the founder of Goodworks Ventures and the High Stakes Foundation. As a result of attending a Play Big Session about a decade ago, she made the decision to leverage her resources to support the people making a positive change in Montana. Her focus is on triple bottom line investments in the for profit arena and rural economic development, leadership development and environmental policy issues in the nonprofit arena. A passionate lover of place, she has a wicked backspin on her tennis game.

I found Mary Stranahan’s name most recently on the 990 form for A Better Big Sky, the Stacie Anderson dark money political slush fund feeding other non-profits, like Forward Montana and MontPIRG.

Going back to Front Step Community Land Trust, where young Dylan works, a name from their 990 form (when they operated under the name North Missoula Community Development Corporation) got my attention, since Alice Boyer ALSO works for Forward Montana, and recently tried to out-queer a critic of their “non-profit” political influence campaign:

Forward Montana and MontPIRG both work specifically with young people, and young people are particularly susceptible to DSA outreach, which is why it probably seems like a natural fit for Sophie Moon to work at MontPIRG while ALSO being a proud member of the DSA:

While Sophie Moon is passionate about young people and serving wine (a dangerous pairing if those young people are under the age of 21), it’s the honing of “communication skills” I’m more interested in, since the question of how our local officials communicate ended up being a big part of yesterday’s budget conversation when one of Bob Campbell’s half-dozen budget amendments focused on defunding the Mayor’s social media enhancement allocation:

All this talk about communication, social media, and money as speech in this post-Citizens United information landscape is pretty useless, if you ask me, when First Amendment protections no longer apply, and for me they don’t.

Another part of Bob Campbell’s effort at “cost saving” yesterday focused on my former employer, the Poverello Center, and the program that I was the first coordinator of, the Homeless Outreach Team, but it’s not the drama that played out between Bob and Emily Bentley that raised my eye-brow, it’s what I found when I went to look for the Pov’s board of directors, which is no longer available at their main website.

I wonder why?

Adrienne Tranel?

Yes, Adrienne Tranel has been on my radar since I looked into her husband, Ben Davis, and his desire to politically pivot from “helping the children” after leaving his private security work with a guy named Matt Epstein and a former spook named Janice. Oh, and Adrienne’s sister, Monica Tranel, lives up Pattee Canyon, unlike Rob “China lover” Chaney, who I mistakingly said was another notable Pattee Canyon resident when his residence is in the other notable Missoula neighborhood, the Rattlesnake, where Missoula’s billionaire, Denny Washington, has a home (thanks for the correction, Pete!)

What I’m doing by mapping out the influence of the this non-profit/political/government nexus of incestuous influence COULD be of interest to conservatives in Montana if they weren’t so pathetically inept in waging counter-information-ops against their better armed, slicker styled adversaries and their largely successful approach to mind-fucking economic captives of today’s Polymarket economy.

For evidence of this ineptitude, here’s Jake Eaton talking on X about conservatives getting daily trounced by the Daily Montanan, Montana Free Press, and other media platforms that overpower the political right, especially with their talk-radio guy, Aaron Flint, going full MAGA for a job in the swamp.

In an opinion piece published at the Flathead Beacon last month, titled “Accountability and Rejecting the Epstein Class“, Alani Bankhead began her piece by declaring she hasn’t raped anyone.

Well, glad we got THAT cleared up!

When Monday’s deadline to dropout passed without anyone dropping out, the electoral victory of Republican Kurt Alme became a very high probability, meaning Democrats will spend the next 3 months playing the victim card for their candidate, which began in earnest yesterday with the top Democrat in Montana saying this:

On Tuesday morning, a day after Democratic Senate candidate Alani Bankhead confirmed she wasn’t quitting the campaign, Montana Democratic Party executive director Emily Marburger held a news conference at the party’s headquarters in Helena. Marburger expressed frustration with what she called “bullying tactics” to pressure Bankhead out of the race.

“These past few weeks have tested me and my staff and our candidates up and down the ballot in ways that are, frankly, shameful,” she said.

Emily Marburger is a woman, as is Alani Bankhead. When you continue reading Bankhead’s op-ed, she cleverly makes an observation about men being her opponents, then quickly pivots to “records” to avoid the gender issue she just cynically deployed:

Every other major opponent in this race happens to be a man. That’s not the issue. Their records are.

One of them is Seth Bodnar. Court records demonstrate that his management while serving as President of the University of Montana resulted in a settlement that forced the university to put in place protections and procedures that help prevent discrimination and better protect victims of discrimination. Now, despite the settlement, Bodnar says the women who won the settlement are not telling the truth and are “without merit.” The women don’t agree.

So, when does Alani Bankhead start talking about rejecting the Epstein Class? She only mentions Epstein once in this op-ed, and Bankhead’s Epstein reference comes after she references a sexual abuse case overseen by Alme, and she does this to score political points against the same system that PAID HER to be a consultant three years ago.

Interesting.

Another opponent, Kurt Alme, has hung his hat on being Trump’s nominee. He conspired with Daines to rob the people of Montana of the ability to choose their Republican nominee. He stands against women’s privacy and body autonomy and, during his time as U.S. Attorney in Montana, cut a deal with a child rapist that allowed a police officer who sexually abused a 6-year-old girl to serve less than a year in prison and avoid being registered as a sex offender. As a U.S. Attorney, he declined 64% of their sex assault referrals. Is a person with that weak record against sex crimes really going to hold the Epstein class accountable?

The system of weak accountability for the Epstein Class that Alani Bankhead is criticizing as a candidate looks just like the criminal justice system she was getting PAID BY three years ago as a consultant, which, in my mind, makes Alani Bankhead a PART OF THE PROBLEM. Lucky for her, holding women accountable in this current environment is nearly impossible when they make such ideal victims.

Being a “key” part of this MBCC training circuit is circumstantial evidence that Alani Bankhead is a political plant who knows her candidacy is part of a vote-splitting effort to ensure Kurt Alme wins in November. When she loses, which everyone knows is pretty much a guarantee, watch what kind of job she gets, because THAT will be the tell. Until then I expect Bankhead to continue playing the victim card by depicting men as bullies, and any future use of the name “EPSTEIN” will be simply be to score political points (while keeping the Epstein focus OFF Montanan Democrats, where it partly belongs).

In her July op-ed, more circumstantial evidence of Bankhead’s true role can be found in her targeting of the DSCC to conclude her virtue-signaling concern about the Epstein Class like this:

Less impressive is the absolute lack of support or even encouragement from my national Democratic colleagues at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). The DC elites think they know how to win elections in Montana, and yet the 2026 election clearly demonstrates their strategies no longer work.

They were all in for Maine U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner, until they weren’t. And now there’s a new opportunity to redraw the roadmap to getting corruption out of the U.S. Senate. The country is hungry for leaders who have spent their careers protecting people – not protecting institutions or powerful insiders.

It’s not too late for the DSCC. We can take back the leadership of the U.S. Senate, and that path toward victory goes through the Big Sky State. I hope that the recent scrutiny of some of our less qualified, turbulent candidates will inspire these decision-makers to embrace candidates like me – an experienced leader with an honorable military background, a passion for public service, and a track record of protecting and defending our communities.

Can Alani Bankhead credibly claim to have a track record of protecting and defending our communities when, by every metric, shit is WORSE THAN EVER?

While Alani Bankhead was helping America lose wars by deploying with Special Forces, then moving on to command an OSI detachment in Kuwait, I was working with homeless people, including LOTS of Veterans who our military broke, then discarded to make their problems the problems of local communities, like Missoula.

Around this same time Brandon Bryant became a whistleblower because, apparently, not every service member was able to stay quiet about the kind of drone technology that they saw killing more and more innocent civilians abroad, in dubious theaters of war–the same technology that is now coming home, so the police who operate in Montana with virtually no consequences can keep themselves even MORE insulated from adverse outcomes.

Brandon Bryant and I are now HEAVILY targeted by local authorities, and part of that targeting includes maximizing the threats we supposedly pose by depicting us as VIOLENT MEN who must be stopped before we snap.

When I saw this narrative forming against Brandon Bryant last August, I wrote this post just a few days before cops beat Bryant up on a Missoula sidewalk.

As I continue looking into the most difficult and dangerous corruption a broke blogger can look into–the kind hidden behind badges, acronyms like CCJI, and the structurally-assured outcomes of coroner’s inquests–new and interesting leads sometimes appear, like the one I’m working on now.

Yesterday I was cc’d on an X thread about a list of 54 American journalists who appeared to have been paid by an organization called the Better Hong Kong Foundation to write nice things about Communist China. Guess who made the list? Rob Chaney! Good job, Rob!

The article suggests that the Better Hong Kong Foundation “deliberately sought senior journalists from influential American media organizations,” which begs the question, is the Missoulian really an influential American media organization?

Yes, I would say it is, because, when your town has a history of being targeted by the CIA to recruit smokejumpers to FIGHT those pesky Chinese Communists, which Rob Chaney wrote about a decade ago, then the town’s newspaper is going to be an important information-node to control.

This isn’t rocket science.

Rob Chaney wasn’t just a “staff writer” at the Missoulian who wrote about the CIA, no, he was a valued cultural voyeur who arrived as a “freelance” reporeter in 1987, and who recently recalled his time with retired CIA/newspaper man, John Talbot, in this article he wrote for The Pulp about a massive condo development (and covered by me in this post).

Full disclosure: I spent the bulk of my journalism lifetime at 500 South Higgins. For a few days, I had the second-best office in Missoula. The best was directly above, where the Missoulian publisher sat. It had a view of the river and an executive toilet.

The Missoulian managing editor’s desk was on the lower floor, looking out at a patio, bordered by an irrigation canal, leading to the little knobby park, and then the Clark Fork River. I never actually used it, as my promotion to newsroom leadership happened just as Lee Enterprises was completing the sale of the building to Bergquist for $8 million.

The hollowing-out of 500 South Higgins Avenue had been going on for years. I first came to work there in 1987 as a freelance reporter. One assignment was to help compile an annual Missoula business report, which noted that the Missoulian was one of the biggest employers in town. At its height, 160 full-time and 45 part-time workers rattled around there. When we moved to a new office on West Broadway in 2021, there were 75, including 21 in the newsroom.

1987 was a BIG year for both Missoula, John Talbot, and the Beastie Boys, who weirdly launched their first international headlining tour that year IN MISSOULA.

Huh?

For John Talbot and Missoula, 1987 was also the year that the first International Choral Festival was held here. This festival, co-directed by Talbot in ’87, is now a beloved local tradition that features children who know how to sing pretty coming from ALL AROUND THE WORLD to little old Missoula.

According to its official history, the seeds for this festival were first planted in France two year previous:

Back in 1985, the Missoula Mendelssohn Club was performing at a choral festival in France.

The event spurred choral conductor and music professor, the late Don Carey, to start an invitational festival in Missoula.

Over three decades before Don Carey traveled to France, John Talbot was in Paris, fighting the Cold War from the cafes while working for the CIA.

But don’t take my word for it, just read the man’s obituary (emphasis mine):

One of the great ironies of this Rob Chaney/CCP scandal that won’t be a scandal because Operation Mockingbird was successful and ALL MEDIA is captured terrain waging cognitive warfare on regular people, is the CUNY recognition this creeper with the peeper glasses (Rob, not John) just got for, get this, INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM THAT FOLLOWS THE MONEY!

Isn’t that fucking hilarious?

Another recipient of this FOLLOW THE MONEY grant to investigate shit reports on immigration/diaspora issues related to…CHINESE PEOPLE! Isn’t that nice?

Would Rong feel at home in Missoula if he came to celebrate with his fellow investigative journalist, Rob Chaney? Yes, Missoula is very cosmopolitan for the discerning traveler who knows how to see the signs of exclusivity and prestige, like this sandwich board sign I took a pic of recently downtown, on Main Street:

If I could play Rob Chaney like a CCP video game, though, it would be the geographical opportunity provided by Chaney’s residence up Pattee Canyon I would operationalize, since I believe I’ve uncovered an enclave of Epstein-connected cosmopolitan beneficiaries who make Pattee Canyon look like Missoula’s version of Laurel Canyon.

If Rob Chaney doesn’t like how I use publicly available information to FOLLOW THE MONEY to what “journalism grants” and Better Hong Kong Foundation support produces for a “staff writer” of a local newspaper, I’m sure the fourth district court kangaroo will entertain whatever delusion he can cook up for a restraining order.

Until I’m disappeared again, though, I’ll keep connecting the kind of dots that inspired a local politician to decry my “Epstein conspiracies” before that very marsupial, and it only cost $355 dollars for me to get the proof that you can catch someone being so slippery with the truth, they can barely respond to certain questions on cross-examination, but that won’t stop a “non-partisan” marsupial from imposing a decade of unconstitutional restraint on one’s ability to convey what the fuck is ACTUALLY going on in the great People’s Republic of Missoula.

On July 30th a Missoula man was arrested for a social media post he made last October. Since the social media post was directed at someone from another state, the FBI was involved. Now this 37 year old man is facing a felony and will likely be extradited at some point to Boston.

Here’s a portion of the press release from United States Attorney’s Office:

A Montana man who allegedly threatened to kill a Massachusetts resident was arrested yesterday.

Matthew Shelley, 37, of Missoula, Montana, was indicted on July 23, 2026, by a federal grand jury in Boston with one count of transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce. Shelley is scheduled to have an initial appearance and detention hearing in the District of Montana on Aug. 3, 2026. He will appear in Boston at a later date.

According to court documents, on Oct. 18, 2025, Shelly used X (formerly Twitter) to threaten a Massachusetts resident.: He allegedly wrote, “You work for k|kes who murdered my family family. I will kill you.”

What I find strange about this case is the near-total silence from local media. It’s been a full week since Shelley made his initial appearance from the Missoula County jail and there’s nothing from the Missoulian, KPAX, NBC Montana, or the Missoula Current.

Why?

Ten years ago local media had NO PROBLEM reporting on a mentally ill snowboarder when an anti-gun advocate had him arrested in Montana. That anti-gun advocate, Jonathan Hutson, even flew out to Montana in order to see the young man appear in court, then complained to local media when the outcome didn’t go his way:

David Joseph Lenio, who allegedly threatened on social media to kill local schoolchildren and Jewish leaders, will not face charges related to the threats if he steers clear of trouble for the next two years.

His public defender, Brent Getty, filed a deferred prosecution agreement Friday that would lead to a felony charge of intimidation being dropped if Lenio breaks no laws in that time.

Flathead County Attorney Ed Corrigan signed off on the agreement.

The man who uncovered the alleged threats, alerted law enforcement and flew to Montana to encourage the Flathead County Attorney’s Office to pursue felony charges, was disappointed with the news.

“The state of Montana is re-arming a man who threatened to massacre school kids and religious leaders,” said Jonathan Hutson of Maryland, a former spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

When I wrote about this case at 4&20 Blackbirds I quoted Rachel Rivas, the director of the Montana Human Rights Network at the time. This was, of course, long before I connected Rachel and her former “non-profit” (rebranded as Catalyst Montana) to the Southern Poverty Law Center scandal.

When Jonathan Hutson and Rachel Rivas didn’t get the felony charges they they were hoping for in order to maximize the political usefulness for their respective organizations, Hutson’s response was to declare WHITE PRIVILEGE, as “reported” by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s own website:

What’s the difference between then and now? Is the difference a depleted financial capacity by the kind of political organizations supporting Hutson and Rivas? Did the Southern Poverty Law Center scandal and USAID funding hits have narrative control ripple effects reaching all the way into Big Sky country?

There is another story about a local crime going unreported because THIS TIME, when flags were recently torn down from the Import/Export market in downtown Missoula, the culprit is suspected to be someone who is a PART OF the LGBTQ+ community, not hate-crime-targeting them.

Two years ago the story–the one that DID get local media attention–was VERY differfent:

Pride month is the celebration of diversity and equity for members of the LGBTQ+ community, and many downtown Missoula businesses celebrate. But one local business was a target of alleged hate crime this week.

Vandals recently removed and then destroyed Pride flags from a downtown Missoula business. Import Market reports on Instagram the flags were removed, torn up, and then defecated on.

When a black man by the name of Sean Stevenson was euthanized by the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office in 2020, I didn’t understand the power of narrative control, so I had a hard time fathoming the non-response from official media platforms, “progressive” non-profits, and that one white professor teaching African Studies who fled Missoula this year like a punk-ass bitch when his grift dried up.

Well, now I know better.

In fact, I’m so well-versed on narrative control I’ve maintained an ability to make important distinctions between THREATS and ACTIONS that I hope to help others understand so they don’t confuse a citizen journalist experiencing lawfare to whatever scary things are being said to Alani Bankhead behind the scenes.

As a non-partisan, hyper-local citizen journalist, I do see Sam as an ally in holding local bad actors accountable, but in this case I had to make a distinction that what I’m going through is far beyond mere “threats” of retaliation, which first arrived in my in-box over three years ago when I attempted to exit a toxic relationship with someone who made in-roads into Sam’s own organization.

Threats to take legal action against me for a breakup couldn’t have become legal actions taken against me over the past 3 years without the help of a system funding the careers of alleged professionals who want MORE of your tax money to grow their punitive protection racket, and they’re going to get it because local media is occupied territory, like Vichy France.
