What Does My Purchase Of A Black Lives Matter Pin Benefitting The Montana Racial Equity Project Actually Do For Black People In Montana?

by Travis Mateer

The title of this post might be a little misleading because I DID NOT waste my money on a #BlackLivesMatter pin in Missoula. Instead, I took a picture documenting the fact some of the monetary proceeds go to the Montana Racial Equity Project.

This group’s PO Box is in Bozeman, Montana, and they do stuff like train people and educate them. Oh, and “consult” with law enforcement organizations.

Here’s a sampling of this orgs work:

When you scroll further down on this group’s project’s page, the pictures are from 2015 and 2016. That’s a LONG time ago. Not very encouraging regarding what they’re doing for black folks in Montana.

But they were concerned about Tamir Rice!

I tried speaking with someone from this org last week, but wasn’t able to connect. I’ll just send them a link to this post instead to let them know I can totally give them an update on Johnny Lee Perry, since they claimed to care about him when NBC Montana was using his fucking mugshot in a sad way or something (and if you’re wondering, yes, that was BEFORE Johnny Lee Perry was shot twice in the back by a Missoula County Sheriff Deputy).

Anyway, here are the national and statewide organizations that “partner” with this joke of an org.

Have a fantastic week, LIBERAL Missoula. The more you fund groups that care so deeply about black people, the better it’s clearly getting for them in Montana!

Keep up the good work!

  1. I don’t understand your mockery of this organization, particularly since you make clear that you don’t know how their funds are spent or what they’ve done in the last six years. Maybe you could ask them. See if their paperwork with the Sec’y of State is current. As you aren’t being taxed to subsidize this organization, and since the donation point states where 100% of button sales proceeds are going, what’s the beef here?
