Those not blinded by American Exceptionalism have long understood the antipathy many US leaders have had toward any international law restrictiong America’s ability to act, even unilaterally, when our alleged interests are being threatened.
While the US doesn’t hesitate to thumb its nose at international bodies, like the UN, what happend at the Venezuelan embassy last week sends one of the most disturbing signals yet that a strain of fascist lawlessness is metastasizing in this country.
And one of the most troubling aspects of what’s happening is how few citizens even know what’s going on, thanks to a compliant corporate media that is worse than the “state media” of more overt authoritarian regimes across the world because our media isn’t seen by the educated classes as being what it is.
Since any opposition to the coup in Venezuela has been effectively disappeared from mainstrean media, I have to go to places like Activist Post to read about Venezuela’s response to US lawlessness:
Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Ron on Thursday urged the Trump administration not to hand over the country’s embassy in Washington, D.C. to leaders of an attempted coup after U.S. law enforcement forcibly removed peace activists who have lived there for since last month as guests of President Nicolás Maduro’s government.
“We denounce these arrests, as the people inside were there with our permission, and we consider it a violation of the Vienna Conventions,” Ron said in statement.
Four members of the Embassy Protection Collective were arrested Thursday—David Paul of CodePink, Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese of Popular Resistance, and Adrienne Pine, a professor who wrote an op-ed for Common Dreams about why she participated in the effort to protect the embassy.
“We do not authorize any of the coup leaders to enter our embassy in Washington D.C.,” Ron said. “We call on the U.S. government to respect the Vienna Conventions and sign a Protecting Power Agreement with us that would ensure the integrity of both our embassy in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Embassy in Caracas.”
While the McResistance frets about the real origin story of Russiagate coming out, the worst aspects of the Trump regime is going unchecked.
Americans might not be paying attention, but the rest of the world most definitely is.
Ever time I think about the United Nations I’m reminded of Star Wars and their “High Council” whose existence is as worthless as ours.
I’m not going to cut and paste this guys bullet points. You’ll just have to read them yourselves.
so you don’t have a problem with a country violating the national sovereignty/property rights of another country?
I’m a big animal rights supporter.
I have a problem with Venezuelan subjects eating zoo animals to survive.
Not to be a critic, but with everything going on here, nobody, myself included, could care less about Venezuela.
So I gotta ask, why are you interested in it?
Is there a US or humanitarian interest there that I’m missing, or should the whole US intervention offend our sense of fair play that Montanans have?
I’m thinking we will have bigger fish to fry, soon, when indictments start coming down in regards to the Russia investigation hoax, which is looking like an attempted coup right here in America.
And how about the Clown Car full of Democrats running for President? I’m waiting to see which camp shows up here to buy the loyalty of the State party, like the expose you did the last cycle.
I see, you don’t care how America fucks with other countries, including their elections, but if that same behavior is directed at your precious Republicans, then you’ve got a problem. if you dish it out to others, I’d say you better be prepared to take it, otherwise you just sound like a hypocrite applying double standards due to the American Exceptionalism you assume gives us the right to behave as lawlessly as possible.
So a couple pinkos got kicked out of an embassy. Big deal.
Wake me up when some fires a rocket.
I think that the US as a nation has better things to do also, than interfere in Venezuela.
I think our own issues are more important though.
There are more interesting things than US diplomacy. Lots of material to blog about.
Can you imagine, what the outcry would have been if the media and FBI tried to overturn the Obama election, like they have for Pres. Trump?
As far as Montana, I think that the Dems haven’t learned a thing, and if the National Party comes in and tells them to sell out for Joe Biden that the HDIC (head Dems in charge) in Helena will go along with it, just as they did for Hillary. The Pete Talbots of the world won’t like it, but they will toe the line.
I see over at POGIE’s site they are all almost orgasmic about the Mayor of Helena running against Steve Daines. He seems like a nice guy, a Liberian refugee who became Mayor in Helena, but the aforementioned HDIC’s will shut him down in an instant when the Dems send Steve Bullock’s presidential campaign packing.
There is a minor problem though, with Bullock running for another office.
Bullock doesn’t want to run against Daines. He would lose.
Montanans are generous, in giving sitting Governors second terms, but when it comes to Dems scrambling to find different State jobs voters are fickle.
How about Kathleen Williams, already wanting to run for the house again. She was a sure loser last time, and she hasn’t gotten any more attractive.
May you live in interesting times!
